FAQs
How would you describe your photography style?
I try and keep my family photography very natural, capturing the action as it happens, so it's lots of fun. I feel this will bring out the true character of your children and will also make the session more enjoyable. We will get some poses along the way
What time do the sessions take place?
The ideal time is either in the morning at sunrise, as early as possible. This is for a few reasons: the early morning light is lovely, children can often be at their best after a good night's sleep and also if we go to the beach it tends to be less busy.
Alternatively, sessions can be scheduled at sunset. Given the later hour, I don’t recommend a sunset session if you have small children. They tend to be more tired, and less patient with the photography process.
Where does the photo session take place?
I prefer to work outdoors and take advantage of the stunning backdrop available to us on the Surf Coast (and the Macedon Ranges).
What should we all wear?
Start with a neutral colour palette like soft greys, blues, creams, whites, navy, browns etc. I recommend avoiding bright colours, licences clothing and logos. They distract from you and the beautiful setting. You don’t want to match everyone in the same colour but play with the same hue of colour. Add layers of different textures like soft cottons and linens for summer or chunky knits and scarves for winter. Florals and patterns also work well – basically, be YOU!
What happens if it rains?
I'll get in touch a couple of days before the shoot (after consulting the weather forecast) and if it looks like rain we can either reschedule or go ahead.
Do you take any traditional posed shots?
Yes, I will spend some time taking some relaxed portraits of you together as a family, as this can be an important record for you too. But I spend more time letting the action happen naturally and capturing the moments as they unfold.
Do you photograph in colour or black & white?
I do a mixture, choosing what I think works best for each individual photo.
What happens if my child is ill?
I am happy to reschedule if this happens, I just ask that you let me know as soon as possible.
Should we bring anything to the session?
It's great if you can bring along some of your child's favourite toys, games, balls, kites, bubbles – anything that you enjoy doing together as a family. Snacks are also a good idea to boost your child's energy levels.
What if my children are having a bad day?
I am a Mum of two, and there is not much that I haven't seen from my kids. So, don't worry, I know kids have bad days. I have a diploma in the art of distraction and use it all the time to get kids involved during the session. These sessions are fun and move quickly. I encourage silliness, and bad jokes. Your job is to relax and snuggle up to your family. I never rush the start of a session, and take some time before I pull out me camera. I want your children to feel comfortable and will get to know them a little before we start.
